FBAC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a favorable lease in a newly outfitted building (2023) with 9000+ sq ft of space, including a darkroom, letterpress space, printmaking space, bookbindery space, and exhibition space.

Job Description

 

The Executive Director position reports to the Board of Directors, which consists of volunteers and business and academic professionals. 

 

As the inaugural Executive Director of FBAC (formerly managed by volunteers), you’ll have the opportunity to forge an effective organization that has been rapidly emerging into the arts and book arts landscape.

 

Responsibilities

 

Team Building and Leadership 

This position involves team building and leading an experienced and passionate staff of full-time, part-time, and temporary instructors. and has deep roots in the community. Working with the team and overseeing their specialties are key elements of this position. Delegation of duties and checking in with staff members is essential for the team to function effectively.

 

  • Oversight of staff

  • Provide leadership to and manage the efforts of site staff to ensure appropriate support of all departments.

  • Retains a diverse, highly qualified staff and volunteers by providing career coaching, growth, and personal development for workers.

  • Represents FBAC at conferences (or can delegate to staff)

  • Represents organization in community engagement initiatives and community events such as the Chamber of Commerce, and organizations in the area to provide support for the community and develop further partnerships.

  • Annual or quarterly staff reviews

 

Donor and Funding Management 

FBAC has a base of five to six  years of donors maintained on a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Database. Management of donors and solicitation of funding with donors and via grants is central. 

Grants are currently written and administered by a grants officer who will request details for grants writing and in turn, will provide grants mostly written for your position to review and sign off on.

Fundraising is conducted in-house and is usually a fun and rewarding activity involving several staff members. Your position will also have direction and oversight of fundraising and membership drives.

 

  • Leads and guides the fundraising direction in collaboration with the fundraising committee.

  • Managing personalized interactions with donors, including arranging meetings with major or prominent donors.

  • Prepares accurate and timely analyses that capture and communicate fundraising results, variances, and performance trends.

  • Supervises the development of operations-based financial modeling with staff

 

Operations

Day to day operations are key to any Executive Director. Some of these functions are delegated by role to other staff members. Knowing how to use the resources of staff and budgets are essential to operational success.

 

  • Implementation of strategic plan from board (presented annual) and development of strategic planning in coordination with the board 

  • Development of tactical plan from Strategic plan 

  • Oversight on employment and operational development 

  • Oversight of operations of building and organization 

 

Programs 

FBAC has a mission statement that is divided between service to the community and providing broad quality programs at the Center. Learning what we do and how book arts function in the art world and in the greater Frederick community will be your first step towards managing programs.

 

  • Ensures that FBAC maintains a diverse programming schedule 

  • Ensures a marketing plan is developed (and budgeted) to promote programs and events as well as FBAC in general.

  • Maintains oversight of outreach activities and programs in the community 

  • Helps develop programs to expand the scope of FBAC activities to fit the mission statement 

  • Responsible for planning, organization, and direction of the organization’s operations and programs.

 

Budget management 

As the Executive Director, one of your primary responsibilities is managing the organization's finances. We currently utilize Quickbooks as part of our established bookkeeping system, which involves tracking finances, gaining insights, and planning for the future through using or adjusting these controls.

 

  • Financial management (can be with supports and oversight from the board)

  • Oversight of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting and internal accounting

  • Develops and implements consistent inventory and cost accounting policies, procedures, and operational reporting/metrics.

  • Coordinates and leads annual budget reviews, monthly and quarterly reviews, and periodic forecast updates with operational and senior management for all locations.

  • Approves major systems implementations related to cost and inventory control.

 

Coordination with FBAC Board

The Executive Director position is appointed by the Board of Directors and will report to the Board quarterly as a written report. Attendance at board meetings is also included in this position to help understand the board's concerns as community leaders and ensure that staff and board members are informed and aware of trends. Accountability to the board comes in a yearly review.

  • Responsible for overseeing and reporting the organization’s results to the board of directors.

  •  Ensures services and funding relationships

 

Working Hours and Benefits 

This position is for 40 hours a week but does assume that the Executive Director has flexibility in how they are assigned depending on the time of year. Some weeks will be more hours while others will be less depending on the demands of the time of year (and artists visits, shows, community activities etc). Availability to staff during events and standard weekday hours is essential. The flexibility to set a schedule for your in-office hours is an attractive option.

Base compensation for this position is $50,000 a year (negotiable). Benefits include an allowance for health insurance or a basic package, sick days, and three weeks paid leave for vacation. Other benefits such as paid parental leave are discussed during hiring processes.

Education, Experience, and Licensing Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, or Management preferred

  • 5 or more years management or supervisory experience

  • 5 or more years of non-profit management experience in an operational environment preferred
